Don't Panic Competition - Vogue

This is the poster I submitted for the competition:
I changed the poster a little by by adding the type.. passion for fashion rather than saying the word Vogue, which was too obvious. I also added some shading to the inner frame to draw the eye into the poster.

OUGD102 - End Of Module Self Evaluation

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Throughout this module I think I have found a deeper understanding for the need to research, and how it's importance contributes to the development of the design process. Researching helps you to understand what is needed to communicate with the public, and I think I have done thisquite effectively to produce work that is visually engaging to its specific audience. 
I have also become more aware of how I am spending my time, through the time management workshop and it has helped me to create schedules to work by, in order to make the most of the time I have.

2. What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

 Learning and understanding different types of researching including primary, secondary, quantitive and qualitative have been usful to gain different elements of research for your subect matter. I particularly liked using results from questionnaire's as they consisted of different people's opinions, so I could develop my design work according to the results.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
 
I like using photography from first hand observations, to work with as starting points for design development. In some briefs I have created and used stencils from these that have proved to be visually interesting. I like coming up with clever designs, and concepts with alterier meanings.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?
 
I used to tend to come up with a particular idea and work towards creating that. In a way I do still prioritise and choose ideas that I like more than others, and spend most of my time developing them instead of giving the other ideas a chance. I will need to broaden my ideas and devlopment work in future design to gain different outcomes.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1. I will develop my skills in Adobe illustrator, as I tend to use photoshop mostly. As it offers you different ways of devloping ideas.
2. I need to be more organised when it comes to mhy design sheets and sketchbooks, so I can see what is missing and what I need to find out more of.
3. I will use the studio in the evenings as it offers a better working environment, and I can produce more work.
4. I will try to be more assertive in crits, and learn from other people's work styles, to help me understand my own style more.
5. I will use reasearch as a way of directing my design process.

OUGD102 - What if. Ideas & Final Pieces

Here are a few ideas that I came up with, through using stencils that I had created from photographs of litter.



As contribution to the final pieces for this brief, I had to make the footprints that would lead people to the nearest bin. I used a shoe stencil and changed the shapes of the type to fit into them. I them used the wing, the same that are being used on the poster, to create a link between the two. I felt the footprints looked better in white as they were more legible once superimposed onto the street image.

OUGD102 - Collection 100. Product

After collecting and categorizing different aspects of Travel, it was time to use this information and work towards creating a product.



I chose Product and Packaging as soemthign to work towards, as I wanted to create something that the audience could use and interact with. I also chose the function had to be to entertain the audience, of which would be young children, who get bored on journeys. The brief I came up with, was to create a Travel Pack to be used as entertainment when on a journey. I decided on this as from my previous questionnaire I asked people how they entertained themselves on long journeys. From this:
72% - listen to  music (cd/radio/mp3)
18% - read
4% - play on laptop or psp
4% - talk/sing
2% - eat
I decided to further this by asking people what they used as entertainment between the age of 6-12years old, from this:
25% - used puzzle books
20% - colouring books
20% - listen to music
12.5% - draw/sketch
10% - electronic game
7.5% - travel games (I Spy/ Counting game)
5% - ate food/chocolate/sweets

I then began to think of what I could include within my pack. I liked the idea of creating 100 things to do within the product, rather than creating a 100 replicas of one product.
I liked the idea of creating a puzzle book, as it was the most popular from my questionnaire. So i looked at different types of puzzles including, maze, crossword, wordsearch, dot-to-dot, spot the difference, tic-tac-toe, anagrams, ladder words, arrow words, word wheels, snake words, reading. I also asked peopel their favourite car games of which were, I spy, counting, telling jokes and facts. Other practical things that people do when travelling include, colouring books, pieces toys together, scratchcards, eating, making things from pipe cleaners, lego, creating pictures using coloured tape, road trip bingo, stickers, and listenin to music cds.
I wanted a theme for my images so at first I looked at making a pirate theme, and made some coffe stained creased up paper and created a treasure map, as I thought this would be relevent. I could look at creating different aspects to the pack with the pirate flags, swords, eye patches, and stripey colour schemes, however after thinking about this I did not think it was very original and would be hard to get first hand observational research of pirates. I decided to go around town and photograph things you would usually notice and drive past on a car journey. I then created stencils from these so I could use them within my puzzle book. I also created stencils from my images of souvenirs from my 100 research, as some were animal forms and they are popular with children. Another thing I wanted to include in the book wher jokes and facts, I researched on the internet for jokes for children, and used some of my travel facts to include. It had turned out to be more of a fun book rather than just puzzles. The font I have chosen to use is called Candara, and I have chosen this as it is clear to read, it is a more curved san serif style font which I feel works the best for this product aimed at children. Here are a few of the puzzles:

For the pages of my book I looked at differnt types of stock and the most common used is low quality cartridge paper as it is usefull for colouring in on. After printing my puzzles double sided onto the cartridge paper it was tiem to go down to vernon street to bind my book, I was only faced with the fact that I had to create a hardback book as a paperback would only rip. This was not a probelm, I had to create a dust cover for the Fun Book.

Considering the branding of the product, it would be bought by parents for the chidlren so it needs to be aimed at them. I wanted to create something eye cathing and clever. After comin up with a few ideas I accidentally came across an anagram that I was using for the puzzle book, it was that you could get 'enjoy ur' from 'journey', so I decided to use Enjoy Your Journey as the slogan. I connected the corresponding letters to eachother to reflect the different roads you take when you travel from one place to another. Each letter and route has a different colour. I think this is a clever logo:

The colour from the logo came from the fact that kids are more attracted to products that are multi-coloured. I decided to mute the colour abit, as the product is aimed at parents to buy to calm the kids down and distract them from their journey, and they wouldn't want to excite the kids too much. I will follow this logo through the different products.

For my book dust cover I wanted it to be kept simple with just the logo and the words Fun Book, printed on matt paper:

It was hard to come up with 100 things for in the book, and I wanted the children to have different things to do to keep them from getting bored. I like the idea of creating scratchcards and also, travel bingo so I came up with some ideas, experimenting with different compositions:

 


I really like these images with the logo faded into the backgroudn as it is colourful yet you can still make out the things you would be looking for when playing travel bingo. I like the bold colour of the scratchcards and think it is a good idea to use 5 as they would be using each colour of the logo. I experimented with printing on matt, glossy and cartridge paper, of which I found the matt to be the most appropriate for the bingo cards, and the gloss for the scratchcards. The cartridhge paper woudl have been nice as it would be the same stock as the paper in the book however I felt the quality wasn't as good as the matt.
Another thing people like to do whilst on a journey is listen to music, so I thought it would be a good idea to create a music cd with different tracks relevent to children aged between 4 and 10. I had to research this genre of music and came across track from Hannah Montana, High School Musical and Disney movies.

I decided on a simple net for the cd packet with just a flap at the top of which you can open and pull the CD out of, I also created this cd circle to stick onto the cd, as a way of linking it with the cover. The tracks are layed out clearly on the back of the cd, with the logo. They are both printed on gloss for the final piece as I felt that worked better for the purpose of a CD.

For the chidlren to colour in the fun book, I decided to include some colouring pencils, of which I created my own box, I wanted to keep this simple with the logo and the words 12 x Colouring pencils, with a simple net:



I also decided to add some little choclate bars into the pack, because from my research, eating was somehting people liked to do, and we all know kids love chocolate.
Now I had the product, I had to create the packaging. I looked at creating a box to fit them all into, of which I could have a sleeve wrapped with the logo and information on. I also looked at created a lucky bag of which was a simpel wallet with a tear off strip that you coudl then pull out the products and chuck away the packaging. I also looke dat a different type of wallet with different slots for the different products. After creating prototypes I realised the box woudl be the best way to contian the objects as it could be reused as a way of staying tidy, and also because it would be hard to lose thigns out off, as oppose to having a wallet with slots.


This is the net for my box, the lid has to be slightly larger with a mroe shallow depth, to make it easy to pull off.
I decided to create a sleeve for this box that I could print the branding information onto. In my crit I was told the product wasn't very clear if you just saw the logo, so after looking at existing products to find out what needs to be on the packaging, I had to give a short explanation of the product on the bottom of the box, explain what the box contains, and include a bar code and the standard product logos that are needed (CE). I also had the logo on the top of the box with the words Travel Kit Age 4-10, so the audience knows immedietly what the box is. The information on the bottom read:
''You can keep the kids entertained for hours on those long, boring car journey’s with the ‘Enjoy Your Journey’ Travel Kit.
There are 100 things to do.
This box includes:

Games
Drawing
Colouring
Jokes
Facts
Scratchcards
Travel Bingo

After creating a protype box, there was something not quite right about the product and I wasn't entirely happy with it. I had the chance to reprint this sleeve design onto acetate. This was much better and the product looked very professional.

Typogateaux Contest

I had to produce a typogateaux that resembled a letterform or glyph.
I chose to create the letter 'S', and made a madeira cake in the form of a snake.

OUGD102 - Collection 100 Research

I had to produce a body of work that investigated the number 100 by collecting, recording, documenting and categorizing. I had to collect 100 objects, 100 opinions and 100 facts that were based on my subject matter, of which was 'Travel'. 
I researched into different types of transport, why people travel, where people travel, what you pick up from journeys, danger of travel, drink driving, things that effect travel such as the big freeze, and facts and opinions surrounding these different aspects. For my objects I collected things like, souvenirs, travel tickets, flyers, maps, travel aids, photographs and memorabilia.
