The Recovery Position -Speaking From Experience

RESERACH ON THE RECOVERY POSITION

Why use the recovery position?

It keeps the casualty in a stable position with their airway

•It prevents the casualty's tongue from blocking their airway

•It promotes drainage of fluids, such as blood or vomit, from their mouth

•It keeps the casualty in a safe position if they have to be left alone

•If the casualty was left on their back their tongue could relax and block their airway

Roll the casualty onto their side as shown. Gently tilt their head back to open their airway.
Monitor the casualty until emergency help arrives.

I drew a silhouette around a person of the recovery position, so I had a life size scale and and image to be able to stencil around...

Using the bottle caps from the check list I have sued them to fill the silhouette...

Here is one of my initial ides:

Taking the green and purple colours from off the check list badges. I prefer these colours to the red. I used the badge designs in the to fill the human figure. I also used a typeface I used on the badges.

After thinkign abotu pritnign the final design, It woudl have proved difficult printign onto such a larage surface (life size) so I have chosen to screen pritn this design onto a pillow case. The case works well with the concept as it can be used for when a person may need to adopt this position and t is also for comedy values.

Speaking From Experience

Week Four:

From Fridays crit I realised the importance of the packaging for the pack, and how it could become quite interactive. I like the idea it being a bag that could be re-used, as when people go to flat parties they usually would bring alcohol in a plastic bag. This also makes it relevant to 'parties'.

Another issue raised in the crit when talking about safety at parties was to look at the 'Recovery Position' and how it could be used in a comical way, yet also being a serious piece of information.
I am going to research into this and think of different ways in which it could mayeb use it.
I think it would be a novelty item and also funny to have a matt with a human outline of a person (like a police scene) in the recovery position, to be placed in a specific area in the party room. Assisted with some information on what to do.

For the 'check list' I had been trying to come up with different ways of making it visually engaging, and I particularly like the look of bottle caps. I think they are relevant to the party theme as 'alcohol' is consumed at them, and they are a good visual when set together in different colours. I have started to come up with my own little pictograms for each instrution on the check list and began making my own bottle caps. I think it would be useful if I had 'what to do' on the bottle cap, and then 'the reason why it should be done' on the reverse side. Here are a few drawn examples:

I re-created these in illustrator, experimenting with different colour combinations:

Chosen 12 for check list (front and back)

In my next crit, I was told to think about creating the check list as badges. This would be novelty items as the students would be able to keep them and pin them to different things as well as having the concept behind them, of a check list. I really liek this idea and I will try to create some badges. However, with the design only being able to go on one side. I will probably have to put the information for each badge, on the card that they pin onto.

I couldn't fidn anywhere that sold badge makers so I bought 12 birthday badges to take apart and put my own designs on:

Thinking of the deisgns for the poster I took panaramic photos of my flat. I tried to include typical things such as the kitchen, sofa, music system, table, chairs. I drew this out and stenciled it onto photoshop so I could manipulate it.

Ideas:

Bag Design Ideas:

In the crit I was told the logo I had chosen was hard to read. I also think it is boring so I will re-design this. However, I just want the words 'flat party' ont he bag deisgn to keep it simple and straigth to the point.

Week Three:

I started to think about creating a check list for the students to be able to go through before their party starts. Here are some instrustions that could possibly be on it, that I have got from from the questionnaire. However, it will only be finalised once the rest fo the pack is designed, as it may have instruction to put items from the pack on display.

Visuals for check list:

Ideas for poster and check list:

Design Boards for Crit 07/05 (clarifies the brief):

Content:
The pack will contain a 'How to' guide in the form of a check list, and a poster that they will be able to put up in their room to keep referring back to.
It will give them useful tips and information and also contain novelty items such as beer matts, door suigns and key rings.

Context:
The pack will be for freshers and will give them advice on how to throw a flat party, as a way of helping them become more social with their classmates outside the college environment.
I will create empahasis on a 'safe' party.
The pack will be fun, and light hearted.
It will be designed for the students to keep and use throughout their time at uni.

Method of Delivery:
In the form of a pack that will be available for students to pick up from a stall at the freshers fair.
I will also direct them to a website where they will be able to sign up to their class, and be able to invite eacother to the party's on there.

Speaking From Experience

Week Two:

I spent alot of time researching existing products of information graphics for some ideas. The ones I liked best were a combination of type and image, as the images broke down the information making it easier to take in and more enjoable to read. However, not taking away the importance of the information. A good compositon of the layout is vital in masking the piece of design a visually engaging one. (Design Context)
I began thinking of my own product ideas:

Important considerations for my product range:
Information: Simplified, broken down so it is easy and more enjoyable to read. Clarity.
Images: Kept simple, not to distract from the information
Tone: Fun (Makes the reader more relaxed, ease nerves for new students), light hearted
Function: To entertain and inform
Colour: If  have alot of illustrations the colour pallete shoudl be kept limited to not distract the reader from the information. However, if the illustrations are kept simple I think working with bold colour could prove effective.
Hierachy: Image, type, composition
Form: shape, structure, relavance to 'party', interactive
Range of products: Must work well together and work as a set

Crit Feedback: 30/04
Here are some improtant things I picked up on fromt he feedback.
1. Is it aimed at a specific type of party? (Safe, controlled, mental)
I want it to be a fun party but I also want them to be safe.
2. Girls or boys - Seperate packs or mixed?
I will create a unisex pack as that is what parties usually are.
3. When to hand out packs?
Freshers Fair (Stall)
4. What the pack contains?
Yet to decide...
5. Cost of makign the pack
6. Differnt party pack examples, combinations
7. Colour
8. Logo
9. Why do people not already socialise much?
Nerves when starting in a new environment, this pack is to make it easier for them.
10. More visuals as all the writing can be hard to take in
11. Mock-ups

Speaking from Experience

After brainstorming different ideas for the brief I chose to go with 'How to throw a flat party'. It is aimed at first year freshers both male and female, and will give them advice on how to organise and prepare for a flat party as a way of helping become more social with their flatmate soutside a college environment. They will respond to the range of products holpefully by using them throughtout their time at uni.

Week One:
I began researching into what people thought made a good flat party through asking questions to students, (being the target audience).
Here are some questions and important answers I picked up on...
What makes a good flat party?
-A good amount/group of people
-Good music/ sound system
-Lots of air
Name an essential item for a flat party:
-Pack of cards
-Shot glasses
-Music
-Alcohol
-Plastic Cups
-Paracetamol
Name an essential action that should be taken before a party:
-Lock rooms
-Designated toilet
-Involve flatmates and get them to invite friends so you don't have to clean up alone the next day
What can be dangerous at a party?
-Smashed glass
-Drugs
-Fire (Smokin, cooking/hob/oven)
-Walking home alone
-Violence
-Leaving sharp items around (knives) and htings that can get broken or damaged

Paty Prep Summary:

In order to keep the party accident free, I looked at ways of avoiding some bad situations:

Crit: 23/04 (With John)
In the crit I was told i should try and come up with as many different ideas as I could for how I could get people to know how to throw a flat party. I want to create a 'freshers pack' for students so I began to think of different things it could consist of:

I also thought of different existing party products that could hold information on:

Another issue was how would the students invite their fellow classmates to the party once they recieved their party guide. I thought of things such as:
Printable invites they could get off the internet,
Word of mouth,
Noticeboard - google calendar
Posters
Website-join as a class-say when having as party-text subscription-immediate invite
Facebook (popular with target audience)
